4. Discussion


4.1 Analysis of results


From the graph, we found out that the orbit period of Callisto is 16.4 days, which is similar to other results (NASA) which states that the period is 16.7 days. We found out that the period of Europa is 3 days which is similar to other results (NASA) which states 3.6 days. We found out that the period of Ganymede is 5 days, which is similar compared to other results (NASA) which is 7 days. We found out that the period of Io is 8h which is similar compared to other results (NASA) which is 1.7 days.





4.2 Key findings


We found that the mass of Jupiter is 1.8879 x 1027 kg.

This result is very similar to NASA which is 1.898 × 1027 kg


4.3 Explanation of key findings



Using the orbital period of Callisto and assuming the orbit radius is known (1880000km) we calculated Jupiter’s mass using Kepler’s Third Law. We then repeated the steps for all of the moons and found the most accurate one.

4.4 Evaluation of Hypothesis



The mass of Earth is 5.972 × 10^24 kg, which means that Jupiter is heavier than Earth. Our hypothesis before the experiment was correct. We could theorise correctly as there are more moons orbiting around Jupiter than there is to Earth.

4.5 Areas for improvement


During our project, we faced a variety types of problems such as bad weather to technical difficulties. One limitation to our project is bad weather, such as rainy weather or heavy cloud cover. When taking pictures, we have to stick to a certain interval of time, if the weather is bad, we will have to skip that interval, which results in an inaccurate result. We could improve by looking at the weather report to see when we should start our experiment.


Another limitation is the technical difficulties we face when we are transferring the data to the computers and graphing it. One of the problems we faced is that the graphing device did not respond to our control as there were not enough data points. This can be improved by collecting more data points and researching on how to use these graphing tools better.

The communication and distribution of work between the two group members can be improved. Sometimes the communication between the group is inadequate and group members are assuming which work is done and which is not. We can overcome this problem by communicating more clearly and checking on each other to see which work is done and which is not.
